Psychic Hygiene For The Working Professional
Those of us who work doing readings for unknown clients have an extremely difficult task, keeping ourselves energetically clean, clear, and protecting our health. We all have had that reading that drains us to the core, leaving us hungry, nauseous, and sleeping for 18 hours, but this is not the only risk. Psychicism is like playing a piano, the more you do it, the more proficient you become, but unlike playing a piano, we’re tapping into an “extra hormone” that, if over-used without protection, can toss all of the other hormones out of sync. Allegedly, we as a species have evolved beyond the need for a functioning pineal gland, the very gland that allows us to access “psychic” information. Without psychic protection, the repetitive use of the pineal gland will cause it to produce too much hormone, which will then disrupt the normal functioning of the pituitary, the thyroid, and the adrenals – hence the extreme fatigue and disorientation associated with Psychic Burn-Out.
The first step in psychic hygiene is making sure that you don’t start your work day with stress, fatigue, or hunger therefore, getting enough rest, eating clean, healthy foods, drinking water, taking vitamins as needed, and finding a way to put the stresses of your normal life on hold while you work is imperative. Meditation, a quick workout/stretch, or a prayer should suffice, assuming that you’re dilligent about recognizing your stresses and addressing them in a timely manner.
Those people who channel have a slightly easier task because our guides can facilitate our protection with little effort on our part. Before I work I call my guides to me with a simple affirmation that they understand as a cue to protect me. A simple affirmation such as, “I call upon the spirit of light and love to protect me as your humble servant” conveys to them that in exchange for speaking for them, I expect their assistance in keeping me safe while doing so. If this isn’t something that you normally do, it helps to write your guides a letter, signed and dated, defining clearly what you intend to do and what you require in the way of assistance in return. To spirit guides, this is a binding contract that they will adhere to for as long as we do … and they LOVE binding contracts!
An invaluable tool in self-protection at an energetic level is a protection piece worn over the third chakra or the solar plexus. I recommend wearing a talisman made of precious metal that can withstand cleansing without disrupting the integrity of the piece. I find silver to be the best material for this purpose as it doesn’t melt, tarnish, or disfigure from heat, and silver belongs to the moon. A talisman comprised of silver and any black stone (ie jett, obsidion, or onyx, but NOT smokey quartz) stands as a guardian at the gate (the 3rd chakra) of your energy source, but remember to make sure to keep it cleansed.
Cleansing a protection piece can be done in a number of ways, with fire, solar energy, or sea salt. When using sea salt, completely immerse the piece, chain and all, in the salt and leave it at least overnight, or for 2 days or longer as needed. This is the gentlest, easiest way to cleanse, but it takes a long time. To shorten the process, assuming that you have a safe place and the sunshine to do it, you can lay the piece out in direct sunlight (not through a window) for at least an hour, more if needed. This may be impractical, depending on where you live and the time of year or the time of day that you need the cleansing.
I always use the fire method, as taught to me by my teacher, but you have to be sure that your talisman is sturdy enough to withstand intense heat. First, find the smallest fire-resistent vessel you can that will hold the entire talisman and the chain. Place your protection piece in the vessel, pour a thin layer of rubbing alcohol over the piece, and set it on fire. The trick is to make sure not to add too much alcohol, you want a small, cleansing fire, not a 10-hour inferno. A tablespoon or two of rubbing alcohol will burn only for a few seconds, which is plenty of time to achieve the desired result. This method works extremely well with natural quartz, often this method of cleansing a new crystal will bring out rainbows and previously unseen beauty, assisting it in it’s own growth process.
And the best thing you can do for protection if you can is to dedicate a room to reading or at least a space. Keeping the room or space meticulously clean and clutter-free alone will keep negativity from building up. A mirror opposite all physical entrances (doors and windows) will deflect incoming unwanted influences BEFORE they can get in. Also protecting the space with black stones in all corners helps a lot, as does anything that refracts light hung high like a shiny mobile. When dedicating a space for reading, clean the space, burn cedar (which is much more effective than sage at chasing out negative influences), and allow a black candle (to absorb negativity) and a white candle (to enhance clarity and light) simultaneously to burn themselves out entirely, then open all doors and windows, turn on fans if possible, and literally blow out whatever doesn’t serve your highest good. After that, sage will keep the space clean, and cedar will dispel anything that still manages to sneak in.
